TUNISIA (TAD) TUNISIAN DINAR

The Dinar with the currency code TAD, is the official currency of Tunisia. It is represented by an Arabic symbol or the symbol ‘DT’ which is more seldom used. It replaced the French franc in 1958. A dinar is divided into 1000 milim.

Currently in circulation

The coins that are found currently in circulation are in the denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 milim, ½ dinar, 1 and 5 dinar. Banknotes are available in the denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 30 dinar while 50 dinar is expected to be released sometime in 2009.

Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques

All banks change foreign currency but for transactions concerning traveller’s cheques they may ask for the receipts and may also want to see your passport. The preferred traveller’s cheques are in Euros and US Dollars. Hotels and authorised exchange offices also provide foreign exchange facilities. Post offices too change foreign currency.

Using credit/debit cards

Major credit cards are accepted in a few resorts and towns and the other tourist areas. ATM’s are available in most of the towns and all the resorts. Please do verify the charges that you may face to use your cards in Tunisia, before going ahead and completing any transactions.

Restrictions

It is strictly prohibited to import or export the Tunisian dinar. You are not allowed to re-exchange above 4000 Tunisian dinar before exiting the country. It is a must for everyone departing from Tunisia to declare any amount that is equivalent to £500. There is no limit however, to the amount of foreign currency that you can take into Tunisia.

Tunisia: An overview

This small Arab-Berber country in the North of Africa is the most open-minded among all the Islamic nations. It has a beautiful contrast of the Mediterranean beaches and the blazing Sahara desert all set in the same country. Surprisingly enough the land is very fertile here. There are beautiful views and glances of the fascinating culture that can behold anyone’s attention.

As far as expenses are concerned, a night’s stay at a two to three star hotel would come to TND80/$57/£40/Є43. A three-course dinner at a restaurant would cost you about TND40/ $35/£25/Є29 while a bottle of fine wine would be around TND16/$11/£8/Є9. A daily car hire up to 1800cc will be about TND150/$107/£76/Є81.
