SEYCHELLES (SCR) SEYCHELLES RUPEE
The Seychelles rupee (roupi) is the currency of the Seychelles. It is divided
into 100 cents. The currency code is SCR and the symbols ‘SR’ or ‘SRe’ are used
to represent it.
Currently in use
Coins currently in circulation are in the denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents
and 1 and 5 rupees. Banknotes come in the denominations of 10, 25, 50, 100 and
500 rupees.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and authorised money dealers at the
airport or hotels. Remember to retain your receipts as you will need to produce
them on departure so as to facilitate re-exchange. Traveller’s cheques can also
be cashed in the banks especially at Barclays, Bank of Baroda, Banque Française,
Habib Bank and Nuova Banq. They are also accepted as payment in hotels,
guesthouses, restaurants and shops.
Using credit/debit cards
You are urged to use foreign exchange to make payments at the hotels,
guesthouses and for other holiday-related expenses. Credit cards are also widely
accepted. However, bills at restaurants, shops and taxi fares outside tourist
premises have to be paid for in local currency.
Restrictions
You cannot import or export more than 2000 rupees from the country without
authorisation. There is no restriction however, as to the amount of foreign
currency that you can take into the country but you must retain the exchange
receipts to be shown on departure.
Seychelles: An overview
Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 tropical islands half of which are composed
of granite while the other half are of coral. Situated in the west of the Indian
Ocean, this fascinating country is a welcoming tourist haunt. The climate is
equable but humid. The beauty of the tropical islands makes it a great tourist
attraction and a much-loved destination by holidaymakers from all over the
globe. The island centre is the hub of all tourist activity.
The cost of living is fairly low with a three-star accommodation costing you
around $60 per night while a meal would cost around $20. A bottle of wine in a
retail shop can cost between SR 90/£3.71/$5.31/Є4.22 to
SR242.25/$14.25/£10/Є11.32 while in a hotel it would be closer to
SR205.40/$12.08/£8.44/Є9.59.
