MAURITIUS (MUR) MAURITIUS RUPEE

The Mauritian Rupee is the official currency of Mauritius and has the currency code MUR. It is sub-divided into 100 cents and is represented by the symbol ‘Rs’.

Currently in circulation

Coins in circulation are 1, 5, 10 and 20 rupees, whereas banknotes are in the denominations of 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupees. Each banknote bears the portrait of an eminent Mauritius personality.

Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques

Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, bureaux de change and major hotels. However, you can convert the rupees back to foreign currency only at the airport. Exchange bureaux pay a better rate than the banks but hotels will give you the lowest rates as well as charge an additional service fee. Traveller’s cheques can provide you with a better rate compared to cash.

Using credit/debit cards

Credit cards are accepted at all main hotels, restaurants and shopping centres around the tourist areas. Areas outside the tourist hangouts take only cash. American Express, Visa, Diners and Mastercard are the favoured cards. Credit as well as debit cards can be used to withdraw money from the ATM’s which are widespread in the country. Credit cards can also procure cash advances from the major banks.

Restrictions

There are no restrictions whatsoever as to the amount of local currency or foreign currency being taken in or out of the country.
