INDONESIA (IDR) INDONESIAN RUPIAH

The national currency of Indonesia is the rupiah. This is commonly denoted on price labels with the symbol ‘Rp’. Although the rupiah is made up of 100 sen, high rates of inflation in Indonesia have meant that this unit is no longer used. The internationally recognisable currency code is IDR.

Currently in circulation

In terms of coinage, denominations commonly come in the values of 100, 200 and 500 rupiah. You may also see coins to the values of 25, 50 and 1,000 rupiah but these are more rare. The Bank Indonesia issues banknotes to the values of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 rupiah.

Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques

Larger urban areas should have foreign exchange facilities available to you. Although you may be safer to depend on banks and larger reputable hotel chains. Always be mindful of the commission charges involved and shop-around for a respectable rate of exchange. Agree to the terms of a transaction before you go ahead with it. Indonesia is a vast country and there are many more remote areas where these facilities would not be available to you. Ensure you have a sufficient cash balance with you in these circumstances before you go. Generally speaking, traveller’s cheques are not ideal. Although you may be able to utilise these in some of the more popular tourist destinations.

Using credit/debit cards

In Jakarta and some of the other larger cities, you may find more exclusive establishments that are ready to accept credit cards. ATM machines would also tend to be concentrated in the major Indonesian settlements. It may be wise to ensure that you have sufficient cash for the more remote parts of the country.

Restrictions

There are restrictions in place on the amount of local and foreign currency that you are entitled to bring into Indonesia. In both cases, this equates to Rp50,000 or the equivalent and it must be declared to customs. There are no restrictions for money being exported from the country for either local or foreign currency.

Indonesia: an overview

Indonesia is made up of an archipelago of hundreds of islands which stretch in a long chain for literally thousands of miles. The country is so immensely vast and it includes a number of different cultures. Bali and Lombok are popular tourist destinations for the western visitors and the tropical climate here ensures that the weather will be extremely pleasant all year round.

The cost of living in Indonesia is very cheap when compared to western prices. The more popular tourist destinations does see a huge hike in price tags, compared with the average of the rest of the country, but you should still find products and services to be relatively affordable.
