Iceland (ISK) Icelandic Krona

The Krona or Kronur in plural, is the official currency of Iceland. The currency code is ISK and the currency is denoted by the symbol ‘kr’ or ‘lkr’. The Krona which means “crown” is symbolic of the other Nordic currencies such as the Swedish Krona, Danish Krone and the Norwegian Krone.

Currently in circulation

Although the Krona is made up of 100 aurar, coins below 1 krona are no longer in circulation. The denominations of coins currently in use are 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 kronur. The banknotes come in the denominations of 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 kronur with 500, 1000 and 5000 kronur being the only banknotes that are dispensed by ATM’s of the major banks in Iceland. The 2000 kronur banknotes are rarely used and are often termed as “tourist money” by the local people.

Using credit/debit cards and traveller’s cheques

For international traveller’s travelling to Iceland, making payments for goods and services are very easy as all major credit cards are accepted in most of the establishments which include hotels, restaurants, car rentals and shops. Most of the stores also accept debit cards. You can even get cash against these cards at all banks and ATM’s. Traveller’s cheques are also widely honoured in Iceland.

Restrictions

There is no restriction as to the amount of domestic or foreign currency that a tourist can carry into the country, provided he is in legal possession of it. The same rule prevails when you are travelling out of the country.

Iceland: An overview

Iceland is one of the most extraordinary travel destinations in the world and although it is called Iceland, you will find ice here only in winter. It is situated in the North Atlantic region to the south of the Arctic Circle, apart from which it lies on the rift where the North American and European continental plates are detaching from each other. It is because of this shift that about 200 volcanoes and a number of geysers are found in the area. As for things to see there are plenty of attractions be it from history, art or culture.

Iceland can be a very expensive place as everything is almost double the price in comparison to some of the other countries. Although of a high standard, a meal for two including alcohol can cost you around 6000 Kronur which comes to about £50 or $75. Alcohol prices are quite steep, with a litre of beer costing you a good £6 or $10. When you plan your sightseeing, it is advisable to hire a small vehicle that will cost you around £40 or $60 per day.

If you are ready to take on the high cost of living in Iceland, you will find that it is a beautiful place to visit. The people are warm and hospitable besides which there are numerous natural marvels for you to admire.
