FIJI (FJD) FIJIAN DOLLAR
The Fijian Dollar is the currency of Fiji since 1969. It is referred to by the
ISO currency code FJD and represented by the symbol ‘$’ or FJ$ to set it apart
from the dollars of the other countries. 100 cents make up a Fijian dollar.
Currently in circulation
Coins that are in circulation today are in the denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50
cents and $1. Banknotes in circulation are in the denominations of $2, $5, $10,
$20, $50 and $100.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
You can change foreign currency at the airport, trading banks and the majority
of hotels in Fiji. Traveller’s cheques can also be cashed and it is always
better to carry traveller’s cheques in Australian Dollars or Pound Sterling so
as to avoid an additional service charge.
Using credit/debit cards
Many of the enterprises in Fiji accept credit and debit cards of Visa, American
Express, Diners and Mastercard. These credit card companies also have
representatives in Suva. ATM’s do not accept international credit or debit
cards.
Restrictions
There is no restriction to the amount of local or foreign currency that can be
taken into Fiji provided it is declared on arrival. The remaining local currency
at the end of your stay can be exchanged at the airport up to the amount of
foreign currency that had been brought in. As for the export of local currency
the amount should not exceed F$500 and for foreign currency in cash, it should
not be above F$500.
