Estonia (EEK) Estonian Kroon

The Kroon, currency code EEK, is the official currency of Estonia. It is divided into 100 senti. The kroon replaced the mark in 1928, but in 1940, due to the Soviet invasion, the kroon was taken over by the Russian ruble. The currency was brought into force again in 1992.

Currently in circulation

Coins in circulation are 5, 10, 20 and 50 senti and 1 kroon. 5 senti coins are not given out any longer but are still legal tender and the 5 kroon coins are hardly seen in circulation. Banknotes are available in the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 kroon. The 1 kroon notes are no longer tendered and the 50 kroon are hardly seen in day-to-day circulation.

Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques

It is easy to change foreign currency at hotels, banks, exchange bureaux in major cities, at the airport and at the main railway station. Traveller’s cheques that are easily accepted are those from Amex, Thomas Cook and Eurocheque.

Using credit/debit cards

You can use your credit or debit cards to get cash from various cash points in the country. All major hotels, restaurants and retail outlets accept credit cards.

Restrictions

As has been declared in all EU countries, a person travelling to and from a country outside of the European Union is required to declare cash at the place of arrival or departure if the sum being carried exceeds Є10,000. This includes apart from cash, cheques, traveller’s cheques and money orders. However, the rule is not applicable to those travelling to or from another EU country.

Estonia: An overview

Estonia is a small country and surprisingly enough, you can travel from one corner of the country to the other in a matter of a few hours. Estonia has existed for almost thirteen centuries and has a rich cultural heritage. It has a remarkable diversity of picturesque landscape, flora, seasons and climate variations within just a few kilometres radius. The nation’s capital of Tallinn is becoming increasingly popular with city break tourists who are drawn by its breathtaking architecture and general history.

The cost of living generally depends on your demands. It is comparatively low as compared to the other European countries. A meal at a medium range restaurant will cost you about 7 Euro/£6/$9 to 8 Euro/£7/$10 while beer at a bar would cost you Euro 1.5/£1.30/$2 for a bottle.
